Ever since mankind started sheltering from nature in buildings, windows occupy an important role in our visual perception of the world. Contemporary art approaches this opening from within and without, exploring boundaries and permeability. The views in both directions, which window panes may interrupt by reflections, are the subject of the exhibition, as is light itself, with its capability of permeating the glass barrier. The reality of the nature we behold “on the other side” is also questioned. The window becomes a field of artistic experimentation in which relations between inside and outside, reality and illusion are tested. Celebrating its reopening, the Museum Sinclair-Haus shows contemporary films, photographs, installations, paintings, drawings and silhouettes focusing on the subject of “windows”.
