In the Movies

Audio visual installation for a cinema, 1 min, Quicktime Film, 2012

Film, concept, animation: Julia Willms; sound: Robert Pravda

In the Movies is an installation for cinema halls. One photograph of a cinema hall (The Movies Cinema in Amsterdam) is the only visual material for this animation.

In it I address the mechanism of looking in cinema: the image does not transport you someplace else but physically moves you in the here and now – by the use of/ and further development of the cinematic technique Vertigo effect in combination with the Droste effect.

In the Movies is a comission for the 1 minute film program Modern Times ‘Faster/ Slower’ by Cinema Zuid (Lucette ter Borg and Sacha Bronwasser). The premiere took place at the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam (Dec 2012). The program contains films ao by Wim van Egmond, Pia Maria Martin, Aernout Mik, Claudette van de Rakt, Nikolas Provost, Guido van der Werve and Rose Butler.
